Blue Fox Studio is an artist-owned small business that celebrates craft and nature.
Blue Fox Studio is the
creative home of Sue Fox Mitrano -
an artist, teacher, and lover-of-patterns.
Sue’s longtime love of printmaking met a new passion for Shibori dyeing in the summer of 2021. Both involve the transfer of designs to a surface, but the processes are quite different.
Printmaking involves a careful transfer of a drawing to plate with the image evolving and changing during the carving. The result is a combination of planning and gut instinct.
The Shibori tradition, a Japanese manual hand-dyeing technique, is less controlled. It requires letting go—a bit scary, but wonderfully freeing. Variations in temperature, dye intensity, and fabrics used also create subtle changes in outcome. Each piece is truly a one-of-a-kind.
Sue’s childhood love of sewing and exploration in fiber arts also led her to discover Wet Felting about 10 years ago. This process of turning soft colorful wool into beautiful and sturdy felt further satisfies her love of texture and pattern.
